Wat Phra Si Rattana Satsadaram, commonly known as Wat Phra Kaew, is one of Thailand’s most sacred places. It was built by King Rama I in 1782, at the same time as the establishment of Bangkok as the capital. The temple was inspired by Wat Phra Si Sanphet in the Ayutthaya period and is located within the Grand Palace complex. Unlike other temples, Wat Phra Kaew does not have resident monks. Instead, it is used for royal ceremonies, including the ordination of royal novices and the oath of allegiance ceremony.
A Cultural and Historical Landmark
Wat Phra Kaew is not only a beautiful cultural attraction but also home to many important historical structures, including:
- The Emerald Buddha Hall, where the sacred Emerald Buddha is enshrined
- Phra Si Rattana Chedi, a golden stupa
- Prasat Phra Thep Bidorn, a royal pantheon
- Mural paintings depicting the Ramakien (Thai epic)
- Phra Mondop, a scripture library
With its stunning architecture and rich history, Wat Phra Kaew is one of the most popular places for photography.
